 Calendar:No Lessons: September 4,November 23-24, Dec.21-Jan 7, April 1-8, May 29.

  • MY RESPONSIBILITIES: I will do my best to treat every student as an individual, providing a positive and enthusiastic atmosphere for learning.
  • STUDENT AND PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES: Students agree to arrive at each lesson punctually, well-prepared, and with their assignment books and music. To make good progress, daily quality practice is necessary. I want the student to completely understand every assignment; please ask questions. When students enroll, they are reserving their place in the studio for the entire year. Students are also expected to register for a minimum of 4 summer lessons. Summer lessons will be arranged during June and July-tuition for summer lessons will be based per lesson. The enrollment is a firm commitment and guarantees your place in the studio.
  • TUITION AND FEES:  Schedule a free lesson/interview and I will go over the tuition and fees at 574-522-5461.
  • LESSON TIME:  The student receives 35 lessons- this includes private and group.  Lessons begin Monday, August 14 and run until Friday, May 23,2018.  The scheduled lesson time belongs to the student.  No tuition credit will be given for missed lessons.
  • SUPPLIES:  Each student should have for each lesson a small 3-ring binder for assignment sheets along with a pencil.  It is extremely important that all students come with their assignment and music materials to all lessons.
  • LOANED MUSIC: Students are responsible for this music and will be billed for music lost, torn or mutilated.
  • RECITALS and EVENTS:  There will be two recitals-student participation is expected.  The AIM Festival is November 4 at Bethel College, Solo and Ensemble (ISSMA) will be 2/3/2018(registration through school choral teacher), the schedule will be announced:  Stickley Competition, the Hoosier Auditions, and the Guild.  I urge all students to participate in at least one event (Guild) besides the recital.
  • PRACTICING:  Students progress at different rates, but all students do progress if consistent time is given to daily practice. Mrs. Lockman reserves the option to discontinue lessons to any students who fail to progress due to lack of daily practice or due to missed lessons.
  • GROUP LESSONS:  Sometimes playing the piano can be a little lonesome. It’s wonderful to play an instrument that sounds so good by itself, but opportunities to play with and for others are not as plentiful as with other instruments. To help make up for this, and also because it’s just plain fun, we have piano group classes during the school year in place of the regular lesson. Activities include: a chance to perform for peers in a relaxed setting, duet, ear training, music history, improvisation and theory games.
  • Termination Policy:  I require 30 days written notice for students terminating lessons for any reason. Payment of 30 days of lesson tuition is required following termination notification. In addition, I reserve the right to terminate lessons with any student for non-compliance with any of the stated lesson policies and requirements.

REMINDERS:  Lessons begin and end on time.  If a student is late, their lesson will be shortened so as not to affect the next student’s scheduled time.  No food or drink in the studio.  No fake/long fingernails allowed in the studio. Any lesson that I have to cancel will be made up. Please understand that the tuition you pay reserves an exclusive weekly time in my schedule for your child. Unlike a doctor or a hairdresser, I cannot resell that time nor can I create extra teaching time in which to give lessons. I look forward to working with you child in their development of music skills and enjoyment.

Music Games, APPS & Incentives

If you have an iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch, there are a variety of education music apps that can help reinforce what is being taught during piano lessons!  Below is a list of a few favorites.

Music For Little Mozarts ($0.99)
Perfect for pre-school or Kindergarten aged beginners.  The app uses the characters Mozart Mouse and Beethoven Bear to learn about high versus low sounds, loud versus soft sounds, names of the piano keys, notes of the staffs, simple rhythms, etc.

Music Flash Class ($3.99)
Just like flashcards, but it’s electronic and more fun!  The app lets you choose the range of notes you want to practice, so this app is perfect for both beginners and elementary/intermediate students.  It’s

Flash Note Derby ($0.99)
Another note-naming app, but it is more of a game!  By naming notes correctly, your horse might win the race.

Note Works ($4.99) – *iPad only*
Another app for practicing note names, but it feels more like a game than a flashcard drill!  This one allows you to save you progress under your own name, earn points, and advance to different levels.

Rhythm Cat (the lite version is free; the full version is $2.99)
This app features various levels where students have to tap out the rhythm shown on the screen.  The graphics are great (with cartoon cats in the background) and the app features great rhythm tracks for the student to tap the rhythms along with.

Rhythm Lab ($2.99) -- iPad only*
This rhythm app is simple yet highly customizable.  The app presents students with rhythm exercises at various levels, and the student must correctly tap the rhythm.

Blob Chorus (FREE)
This ear training app is fun and silly, but really works!  Each of the blobs in the chorus sing a note, and then the king blob sings his note.  The aim of the game is for the student to identify the blob that sang the same note as the king blob.

Steinway Metronome (FREE)
There are lots of metronome apps out there, but this one is my favorite.  It looks nice and is easy to use.

Petronome (FREE)
This metronome app is appealing for young students because they can choose their own "animal" that will meow/bark as a metronome.  This makes playing with a steady beat a lot of fun.
